Volodymyr Liashenko, Charge d’affaires a.i. of Ukraine to the Hellenic Republic, shares his thoughts with TA NEA on the sudden shift in balance brought on by the Ukraine’s invasion of Kursk and on how he envisions the end of the war. In anticipation of yet another Peace Conference on Ukraine he expresses optimism about the future. ‘In 2022, Russia was considered the second-largest military power in the world. In 2024, it is considered the second-largest military power in Russia,’ Liashenko joked
- What are your thoughts on the incursion of Ukraine into Kursk and what should we expect after this, regarding the possible outcome?
Our key interest is to finish this war as soon as possible on the terms, outlined by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine’s Peace Formula. Ukraine has no interest in gaining new territories nor are we interested in expanding the war any further.
The operation in the Kursk region highlights the effectiveness of our proactive, preventive defense as the most powerful counter to Russian terror. By advancing into enemy territory and securing over 1,250 square kilometers, we have not only disrupted Russian shelling operations of the territory of Ukraine in the region but also created significant logistical challenges for the aggressor state. This approach, which many have once been thought impossible, has proven essential in undermining Russia’s ability to continue its campaign. Moreover, the surrendering of a large number of Russian prisoners makes for not only the replenishment of Ukraine’s “prisoner exchange fund” but also marks a general unwillingness of Russian troops to fight this war.
The success of our forces, which many deemed impossible, shows that the war’s outcome hinges on courage—ours as well as that of our partners. Together, we will continue to pressure Russia until it has no choice but to seek a just peace.
- Are you worried about the results of the US presidential election in November, given that former President D. Trump has declared that, if he is reelected, he will “end the Russian – Ukraine war in one day?”
Ukraine remains committed to continuing its cooperation with the U.S., regardless of the outcome of the upcoming presidential election, as outlined in the Bilateral Security Agreement signed in June 2024. This agreement emphasizes mutual respect for independence, sovereignty, and international law. President Zelenskyy acknowledged the significant support provided by President Trump, who was the first to supply weapons to Ukraine after Russia’s 2014 invasion.
President Zelenskyy said that working with Donald Trump, should he be re-elected, will be “hard work, but we are hard workers.” He expressed his hope that Mr. Trump will not side against Ukraine, and he believes in the potential for collaboration based on shared values. If Donald Trump has a plan to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, it’s crucial that we learn about it as soon as possible, even before the U.S. elections. Every day of this war costs Ukrainian lives, and our priority is to protect our people and our sovereignty.
As you know, Kamala Harris, the Vice-President of the USA, took part in the First Peace Summit in June 2024, once again confirming an unwavering commitment of the US to support the people of Ukraine.
In any case, Ukraine respects the U.S. electoral process and is prepared to work with whichever President the American people choose.
- How would you visualize the end of the war? Can you see a point in time that Ukraine holds a different – maybe more elevated – position geostrategically, with more allies around the world?
The end of the war, as we envision it, will see Ukraine as a fully sovereign and secure nation, having reclaimed all its territories. Our resilience and determination, guided by President Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula, have already strengthened our position on the global stage. This formula outlines the essential steps for achieving a just and lasting peace, ensuring Ukraine’s security and sovereignty.
The world has witnessed our commitment to democratic values, and this will attract more allies who share our vision for a stable and secure Europe. Ukraine’s role in global security, economic networks and food security will be more significant, contributing to regional stability and strengthening our position as a crucial partner in international affairs. This war, though devastating, will ultimately elevate Ukraine’s standing and ensure a more secure future for our people and allies.
- In what ways has Greece helped Ukraine and how can more countries help right now?
Greece was among the first to support Ukraine since the Russian full-scale invasion of its territory, providing immediate aid and assistance for Ukrainians under temporary protection. We deeply appreciate the Greek Government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for backing our European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations and supporting all 14 EU sanction packages against Russia. Greece also joined the F-16 Coalition and the Coalition of Demining.
Additionally, Greece joined 44 countries in supporting the creation of a Special Tribunal on Russian crimes and participates in President Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula, focusing on food and environmental security. Greece’s commitment extends to aiding Ukrainian children displaced by the conflict. This year, in cooperation with the MFA of the Hellenic Republic, the Municipality of Athens, the Federations of Greek communities in Ukraine and the Greek-Ukrainian Chamber, we have already implemented the project of the recreation for 200 Ukrainian children from different cities, including Odesa and Bucha.
In July, Greece joined the International Coalition for the Return of Forcibly Displaced Ukrainian Children, emphasizing the urgency of reuniting them with their families.
Moreover, to sustain the level of civilized life in our cities today, Ukraine is in desperate need of support of our partners in rebuilding/restoring our country. We hope that Greece and others will engage more proactively.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all our partners, including Greece, who stood by us during our darkest hours. Together, united in our resolve, we will achieve victory and secure a brighter future for Ukraine and the world.
