Representative Nicole Malliotakis has introduced a legislative initiative to permanently lift the arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus. The proposal aims to eliminate the need for an annual International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) waiver, which currently complicates long-term defense planning for Cyprus.

By establishing a permanent framework, the legislation would streamline the acquisition of American defense systems, strengthening the strategic partnership between Washington and Nicosia while enhancing Cyprus’ defense capabilities.

The arms embargo on Cyprus was initially imposed in 1987 with the stated aim to encourage reconciliation and the resolution of the island’s division. However, recent years have seen a shift in U.S. policy, recognizing Cyprus’ strategic importance in the Eastern Mediterranean and its role as a reliable partner in promoting regional stability.
