Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the significance of Europe actively engaging in the resolution of global issues during his arrival at the European Political Community Summit in Budapest, Hungary, on Thursday, November 7.

Mitsotakis furthermore, addressed the issue of climate crisis, noting that Europe must recognize the need for increased resources to tackle the crises it’s facing.

He also once again extended his congratulations to the new U.S. President Donald Trump for his electoral success.

“This meeting is taking place amid a very turbulent time. I want to begin by congratulating Donald Trump on his emphatic success and expressing hope that the North Atlantic Alliance remains strong in addressing challenges, the prime minister stated.

Mitsotakis called for the need to be realistic, as Europeans cannot approach the North Atlantic Alliance merely as observers, adding that Europe must play an active role in solving global problems.

“We will also discuss competition and geopolitical issues. Europe must understand that more resources will need to be allocated to face further challenges,” Mitsotakis noted.

In addition to the European Political Community Summit, the Greek prime minister will also participate in the informal European Council meeting taking place on Friday, November 8.

The European leaders’ agenda of discussions is expected to focus on the outcome of the recent U.S. elections and how it will impact the EU, as the leaders seek to align on a common approach.

Discussions during the informal European Council taking place on Friday are anticipated to focus on European competitiveness, sparked by the Draghi report, who will be present at the meeting, as will the President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde.
