Greek Politician Calls for Formal Invitation of Elon Musk to Speak in Parliament

In his letter, Velopoulos claimed his initiative aimed to highlight Greece’s support of free speech

In a surprising move, the leader of the Greek right-wing party Greek Solution (Elliniki Lysi), Kyriakos Velopoulos called on the Greek parliament to officially invite Elon Musk to speak before the country’s national assembly in a letter he submitted to the President of Parliament Kostas Tasoulas.

In his letter, Velopoulos claimed his initiative aimed to highlight Greece’s support of free speech.

He argued the invitation would be beneficial for Greece’s national interests, adding it was also “symbolically imperative”. According to Velopoulos, the initiative would serve as a message to the international community, reaffirming Greece’s role as both the cradle of democracy and its primary custodian.

The proposal was also forwarded to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the leaders of parliamentary parties, and all members of parliament.

In the letter, Velopoulos, who has never hidden his praise for Trump’s close associate, highlighted the Tesla CEO’s admiration for Greek history and culture, citing Musk’s public statements about Greece and his concern over the country’s demographic challenges. Velopoulos noted that Musk’s classical education and his vocal support for Greece make the invitation not only morally justified but also of significant national benefit.

“Musk has consistently expressed respect for Greek history and has drawn attention to critical issues like the demographic crisis affecting our nation. These qualities, combined with his global influence, make him an ideal figure to highlight Greece’s enduring role as a beacon of democracy,” Velopoulos wrote.

Velopoulos described Musk as a leader in the global effort to promote freedom of speech and the unrestricted exchange of ideas—principles he deemed the essence of democracy.

The proposal, if realized, could underscore Greece’s cultural and historical significance while leveraging Musk’s global influence to promote democratic values on an international stage.

Elon Musk has used his extensive reach via his social media platform “X” (formerly Twitter) to weigh in on several political issues across the world, prompting many to accuse him of interference in countries’ internal affairs. These interventions include throwing his support behind the far-right party in Germany AfD re-igniting public discourse, and amplifying the sex grooming scandal in the UK while lambasting British PM Keir Starmer about his role in the scandal that rocked the country.
