Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking from Berlin, expressed confidence in Greece’s ability to manage migration flows and simultaneously advance asylum procedures. He stressed the need for more help, more funds, better cooperation with third countries, and a more effective return policy.
“Migratory flows in Greece can now be managed, and we can simultaneously promote asylum procedures,” he said.
Mitsotakis announced during a discussion with CDU leader Friedrich Merz at an event organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation titled “Greece and Europe: a new chapter with Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Friedrich Merz” that Greece and Turkey have come to an agreement on a Roadmap for the normalization of their bilateral relations.
The PM expressed support for the European Commission’s proposal for the “ownership” of each member state’s fiscal path, advocating for fiscal flexibility in exchange for the consistent implementation of reforms in anticipation of the restructuring of the European Stability Pact.
The Prime Minister emphasized the non-negotiable nature of fiscal discipline, stating, “Through a pro-development policy, it is my commitment to the Greek citizens not to go through what happened in 2010 with the economic crisis.”
Mitsotakis highlighted the agreement with Turkey on a Roadmap for the normalization of bilateral relations. He emphasized the importance of projecting a “positive” agenda and preventing difficulties from escalating into a military confrontation. Mitsotakis mentioned his recent meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, expressing strong disagreement with his comments on Hamas but indicating that it shouldn’t prevent welcoming him to Greece in less than a month for discussions on their bilateral relations.
