Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a phone call earlier on Tuesday, discussing key developments ahead of the special European Council meeting in Brussels on March 6.

According to government sources, Mitsotakis briefed Zelensky on Greece’s stance for the upcoming summit and reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to securing lasting peace in Ukraine.

The Greek PM emphasized that achieving this goal would require significantly enhancing both the EU’s and Ukraine’s defense capabilities, alongside continued support from the United States. He also reiterated Greece’s unwavering solidarity with Ukraine.

EU leaders will convene in Brussels on Thursday for an extraordinary summit to discuss defense spending, support for Ukraine, and broader European security concerns.

The meeting follows a heated Oval Office incident between Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelensky is expected to attend the summit.

“The EU is ready to work with all our European partners and other allies in a peace plan for Ukraine that ensures a just and lasting peace. We must learn from the past. Peacemaking goes hand in hand with peacekeeping,” said European Council President Antonio Costa via his X account.

Earlier on Tuesday, the European Commission unveiled a new defense financing proposal, calling for €150 billion in joint EU borrowing to support military investments across member states. This initiative is part of a broader €800 billion effort aimed at strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities amid growing security concerns.
