The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis convened an emergency, closed-door meeting with the relevant ministers of Digital Governance and Family and Social Cohesion at the Maximos Mansion on Tuesday Dec. 17. The focus of the meeting was the formulating of a plan for protecting minors in Greece from potential social media dangers.
According to sources, announcements regarding the government’s plan and first interventions to be put in effect are expected later today.
Mitsotakis, in essence, sets in motion the plan to impose restrictions on children under the age of 15 years having access to social media, in an attempt to safeguard the country’s youth.
Dimitris Papastergiou, Minister of Digital Governance, presented a strategy in order to combat digital addiction among minors. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Health, Eirini Agapidaki as well as the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports, Kyriakos Pierrakakis.
This initiative is part of a broader government effort to limit minors’ exposure to harmful online content. The Minister for Family and Social Cohesion, Sofia Zacharaki, has spoken about the broader plan, specifically mentioning the platform that will be implemented for parental control.
Highlighting the close cooperation between the Ministries of Family, Education, and Digital Governance, Zacharaki has noted that a mechanism with “keywords” will be put in place within the parental control app, ensuring that minors will not have access to offensive and disturbing content.
Following the meeting on social media regulations the prime minister will receive the New Democracy MPs without a government position at the Maximos Mansion.
The highly anticipated meeting, between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the New Democracy MPs is taking place in a positive and festive atmosphere, shortly after the approval of the budget and before the Christmas holiday break. The MPs are expected to engage in discussions regarding current issues with the Prime Minister.
