Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is traveling to Brussels on Wednesday, Oct. 16, to participate in the EU-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit. The summit will be co-chaired by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar.

Mitsotakis is also scheduled to meet with the Deputy Prime Minister of Oman, and with the Emir of Qatar, prior to the official start of the summit.

The prime minister will highlight Greece’s role as a pillar of stability and security in the region aiming to strengthen cooperation with key geopolitical partners.

This summit offers the European Union an opportunity to build a closer partnership with the GCC and its member states, which include the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait, nations that are considered crucial strategic allies in the current complex geopolitical climate.

Key issues on the summit agenda for discussion include addressing shared global challenges, the promotion of economic cooperation, including trade and investment, energy partnerships as well as sustainability and climate action amongst others.

In addition to the EU-GCC summit, Mitsotakis will also participate in the European Council Summit in Brussels, taking place on Thursday and Friday.

The EU Summit will focus on the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, the EU’s global competitiveness, migration, the accession prospects of Moldova and Georgia, the political situation in Venezuela, hybrid threats, and the fight against all forms of discrimination.
