Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will head to Brussels on Thursday to attend the European Council Summit on June 27-28. During this meeting, the final appointments for the EU’s top leadership positions are anticipated to be confirmed.
In a significant development last Tuesday, a teleconference involving the six negotiators from the three main European political groups— European People’s Party (EPP), Socialists, and Liberals—led to a consensus on a joint proposal.
They agreed to support Antonio Costa for President of the European Council, Ursula von der Leyen for President of the European Commission, and Kaja Kallas for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
One of the key items on the leaders’ agenda is the adoption of the EU’s Strategic Agenda, which will guide the Union’s strategic direction for the next five years. The agenda encompasses crucial issues such as strengthening European defense, EU enlargement, a comprehensive approach to migration, and boosting Europe’s competitiveness.
The Greek prime minister is also expected to address European defense strategies. He will discuss a proposal he co-authored with Donald Tusk in a letter to the President of the European Commission. This proposal advocates for the creation of a common European defense project, funded by EU resources, specifically aiming to establish a European air defense shield.
Additionally, European leaders will review the latest developments in the Middle East and Ukraine, ensuring these critical issues remain a focus during the summit.
