Greek Frigate ‘Psara’ Downs 2 Houthi Drones in Red Sea

"Psara" came under attack while protecting a commercial vessel by four unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) launched by the Houthis against both the commercial vessel and the frigate

The Greek Navy frigate “Psara” shot down two drones reportedly fired by Iranian-backed Houthi militants in the Gulf of Aden on the morning of Sunday.

The Greek frigate, a MEKO 200 Class frigate, came under attack while protecting a commercial vessel by four unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) launched by the Houthis against both the commercial vessel and the frigate.

The vessel’s anti-drone system was immediately activated, with the frigate’s gun engaging the four drones. Two drones were shot down, while the other two reportedly abandoned the area of engagement.

After the attack, the Greek Navy vessel, which is participating in the European Operation “ASPIDES” (EUNAVFOR ASPIDES) aimed to secure the free passage of commercial vessels in the Red Sea, continued its mission as normal.

This is the second Greek warship that has come under attack by the Houthis in the Gulf of Aden, as the frigate “Hydra,” which also participated in the ASPIDES operation, also thwarted a drone strike in March 2024.

Yesterday, Saturday 6/7, the Greek Minister of Defense, Nikos Dendias, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, visited the frigate “Psara” at a port in Djibouti. They were briefed by its captain on the frigate’s mission.

HS Psara is the second Greek frigate to participate in the European Operation “ASPIDES”, which covers the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Gulf of Aden under the EU Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP), by accompanying vessels and protecting them against possible attacks.
