The Greek National Security Council (KYSEA) will convene on Wednesday under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, following Iran’s attack on Israel and the anticipation of Tel Aviv’s response to Tehran.
The meeting is scheduled for 4 PM during which there will be a briefing on the escalating situation in the Middle East, as well as the plan for evacuating Greek communities in Lebanon and Israel.
Furthermore, the meeting’s agenda will include the migration issue, as the outbreak of war in the broader region could lead to potential migration flows from Lebanon.
According to sources, there is a plan for the evacuation of Greek citizens from Lebanon and Israel, including Greek passport holders and their dependents, such as spouses and children, with both civilian and military aircraft on standby to carry out evacuations if requested.
Meanwhile, at the request of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Cyprus, the Hellenic Air Force will provide a C-130 transport aircraft for the evacuation of Cypriot nationals from Lebanon.
On Tuesday night, Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles against Israel, according to a statement from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Air raid sirens sounded in central Israel on Tuesday, the military said, as citizens are taking cover in bomb shelters.
The Iranian attack came a day after the Israeli army launched ground operations into southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah positions. Earlier on Tuesday, the White House warned that Iran was poised to launch a ballistic missile attack on Israel soon, instantly ratcheting up fears of an all-out war in the region.
