Greece’s Ministry of Foreign affairs has released a statement to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reaffirming its commitment to international law and the principles of sovereignty.
The statement, which was released in Greek on X and on the website of the MFA, reads as follows:
“On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we stand with sorrow and respect for the thousands of people who have lost their lives and in awe of the immense devastation that has taken place.
Our thoughts also go out to the thousands of our compatriots in Mariupol and the surrounding areas, who have endured the horrors of war and continue to suffer its consequences.
Greece has consistently and as a matter of principle supported adherence to international law and the United Nations Charter, condemning any use of force as well as the threat of force against sovereign states.
The only viable solution is the cessation of deadly hostilities and the establishment of a universally accepted, just, and lasting peace for Ukraine.”
Greece’s statement reaffirms its principled stance on international law, sovereignty, and conflict resolution, and emphasizes its concern for the Greek diaspora in Mariupol, highlighting its historical and cultural ties to Ukraine, particularly to the Greek communities in the war-torn region.
The statement aligns with broader EU and NATO positions in condemning Russia’s actions while maintaining Greece’s diplomatic emphasis on peace and multilateralism.
