Greek Foreign Affairs Minister George Gerapatritis on Wednesday promoted Athens’ twin candidacies for a non-permanent seat on United National Security Council for 2025-26, as well as membership on the Human Rights Council for the 2028-2030 period.
Speaking at the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, he pledged that as a member the Greek side will seek close cooperation with all countries and UN institutions in order to safeguard human rights.
“World leaders must identify and set in place mechanisms effectively to implement rights protected by International Law and, primarily, the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. No one should be able to escape without being held accountable for actions violating globally acknowledged rights,” he noted, adding: “There is no room for delays. Yesterday was lost, tomorrow may be too late.”
On the sidelines of the sessions, the Greek foreign minister met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, with talks focusing on current developments.
