Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is chairing a cabinet meeting at the Maximos Mansion, on Monday. The agenda of discussions will include the presentation of legislative measures to be taken, regarding juvenile crime, among other issues.
According to sources the Ministers of Justice and Citizen Protection will present legislative initiatives aimed at addressing violent incidents among minors. The same sources disclose that stricter regulations will be introduced regarding parental criminal liability in cases where minors commit serious offenses due to lack of parental supervision.
There is also consideration of lowering the age of criminal responsibility by one year to 14, with parents of offenders facing specific fines. The option of introducing reformation measures for minors aged 12 to 14 will also be considered.
The relevant ministers have already publicly hinted at the government’s intention to introduce this new stricter framework regarding youth crime. What is more, SaveYOUTH initiative, a special panic button for the protection of minors, is expected to be launched soon, with a pilot phase targeting minors aged 12 to 18.
The cabinet’s agenda also includes a presentation by the Finance Minister and Deputy Minister of the Medium-Term Fiscal and Structural Plan. The plan will outline key economic figures up to 2028, with the main goal being a reduction of the country’s debt to 133.4% of GDP.
What is more, the Interior Minister will present the annual hiring plan for 2025, with focus on healthcare. According to reports, public sector hires will exceed 19,000, with 4,000 of these aimed at strengthening the national health system.
The plan follows the rule of one hire for every retirement, with allocations focused on meeting the needs of services affecting citizens’ daily lives and improving state functionality.
