Greece’s collaboration with the FAO were discussed during an online meeting led by Minister of Rural Development and Food (MRDF), Lefteris Avgenakis, and Miguel Bernal, Executive Secretary of the GFCM, joined by committee members and Georgia Chondroleou, Greece’s National Coordinator for FAO-related agri-food system transitions.
The primary focus was on preparations for the GFCM’s Regional Conference on Mediterranean Aquaculture, slated for December 2024 in Greece. This event will tackle critical issues such as water management in the Mediterranean and fisheries, drawing participation from global leaders and FAO officials.
In the aftermath, discussions delved into drafting a comprehensive Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Rural Development and Foods and the GFCM, outlining the agenda and logistics for the anticipated two-day conference.
Following the meeting, Minister Avgenakis emphasized the deepening MRDF – FAO collaboration, extending beyond sustainable development to include fisheries.
Reflecting on the recent two-day Conference in Elefsina on Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Fishing Tourism, he underlined the pressing need for enhanced water management in light of escalating climate impacts.
Recounting Greece’s firsthand experiences with recent devastating floods and fires, he pledged decisive action to bolster the nation’s resilience to the climate crisis in alignment with the 2030 Agenda.
