Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and his Turkish counterpart Yasar Guler are expected to hold an informal meeting today on the sidelines of a NATO defense ministers’ summit.
The meeting will aim to further promote the avoidance of provocations in the Aegean Sea, which lies between the two countries’ mainlands, is dotted with dozens of Greek islands and has often been a focal point of tension – the latter mostly linked to Ankara’s unilateral claims and a revisionist agenda.
The defense ministers will be in Brussels on the occasion of preparatory sessions ahead of a NATO Summit to be held in Washington in July 2024.
Today’s meeting will be chaired by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and will address defense spending and ammunition production.
It is held on the heels of yesterday’s meeting, which was hosted by the United States and comprised of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, and discussed support to Ukraine, according to an announcement made by NATO.
