Greece’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Christos Stylianides, made an official visit to London where he met with the Secretary-General of the IMO, Arsenio Dominguez, on Tuesday, January 28, and also signed a “Memorandum of Understanding between Greece and the United Kingdom (UK) regarding Collaborative Actions in the Field of Commercial Shipping,” on Wednesday, January 29.

The meeting between Stylianides and Dominguez took place at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in a particularly warm atmosphere.

The two men discussed the challenges related to strengthening the attractiveness of the maritime profession. They also discussed the complex geopolitical developments and their impact on shipping, as well as the progress of the IMO’s strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in light of the upcoming sessions of the Organization in 2025.

Stylianides and Dominguez confirmed the converging views of both sides on the major issues concerning international shipping and seafarers, as well as Greece’s unwavering support for the work of the IMO.

On Wednesday, Stylianides visited the UK Department for Transport and met with the British Minister of State for Transport, Mike Kane MP, on the occasion of the signing of the “Memorandum of Understanding between Greece and the United Kingdom regarding Collaborative Actions of the Two Countries in the Field of Commercial Shipping.”

The goal of this memorandum is to strengthen cooperation on maritime transport issues, ensure the sustainable development of shipping, promote green shipping, and enhance the human resources in the maritime sector.

The cooperation outlined in the memorandum particularly focuses on the areas of maritime safety, education, marine environmental protection, and the facilitation of shipping.
