As of January 1, 2025, Greece assumed the position of a non-permanent elected member of the UN Security Council. In an announcement by current Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis, the minister noted it is occurring at a particularly critical juncture in international affairs.Greece says that it will play an “essential role in co-shaping international politics for the global security architecture and will have a significant voice, role, and responsibility in global developments.”

The announcement added that the country is “committed to a foreign policy based on principles, values, and international law, Greece looks forward to acting as a stabilizing factor, serving as a bridge between the North and the South, the East and the West, while contributing to restoring the true meaning of the principle of the peaceful resolution of disputes.”

Greece plans to spend the two-year term promoting multilateral diplomacy and the principles of the UN Charter.

The Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, delivered a speech during the flag-raising ceremony for the member states of the UN Security Council. The event marked the formal recognition of the Council’s composition and underscored the significance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges.

Ambassador Sekeris emphasized Greece’s commitment to upholding the principles of the United Nations and contributing actively to the Security Council’s mission of maintaining international peace and security. His remarks resonated with the broader goals of fostering dialogue, mutual understanding, and effective multilateralism in addressing pressing global issues.

Sekerris reaffirmed “Greece’s commitment to the principles of the UN Charter,” emphasizing that “our country’s foreign policy is based on values such as international law and a dedication to peace.”
