Greece’s defense ministry on Wednesday announced that US authorities have sent an official Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) regarding the procurement, by the latter, of the fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets for the Hellenic Air Force. According to reports, the LOA expires on June 9, 2024.
The Greek government has previously signaled its intent to purchase roughly 20 of the warplanes, as part of a major modernization program for the country’s air force. Greek DM Nikos Dendias reiterated Athens’ interest in the F-35 late last month, while also saying the Hellenic Air Force will sell-off or simply retire surplus fighter jets, such as F-16 Block 30 planes, the F-4 Phantom and the Mirage 2000-5.
The Hellenic Air Force would ostensibly take delivery of the first F-35 in 2028, based on the current timetable.
