The Ministries of Defense and Digital Governance announced Greece was selected as one of the two hubs for the European Union’s secure satellite communications program, GOVSATCOM.

The selection was made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, with Germany being the other pick. Both countries will undertake a central role in realizing the most critical security infrastructures in the EU.

The HUB in Greece, as part of the European Space Program, will serve as the management and delivery center for secure satellite communications for critical infrastructure across all EU member states, with no risk of interference from third countries or other external threats.

This project bolsters Greece’s geopolitical position, establishing the country as a pivotal player in the European Union’s security architecture. Hosting the GOVSATCOM HUB places Greece at the forefront of European developments in innovation and security, while also attracting significant investments and specialized talent in the field of space technology, further boosting the domestic ecosystem.

Remarking on the decision Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said: “The decision for the installation of one of the two GOVSATCOM hubs in the country establishes the geopolitical and strategic role of Greece as a pillar of security and stability in the European Union. The hosting of the hub in Attica also underscores the concrete confirmation of the European Union’s trust in Greece’s infrastructure and operational capabilities.”

On his part, the Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou stated: “The selection of Greece as one of the two hubs for the European GOVSATCOM program is a clear recognition of our progress in the technology sector. Through systematic efforts, our country is establishing itself as a hub of innovation at the European level, a development that is particularly critical for broader growth and the strengthening of the domestic technology ecosystem.”

The European Union Governmental Satellite Communications (GOVSATCOM) program aims to provide secure, resilient and cost-efficient satellite communications capabilities to security and safety-critical missions and governmental operations managed by the EU and its Member States, including national security actors and EU Agencies and institutions.
