"The current humanitarian Crisis in the Gaza strip cannot be dealt without dialogue and diplomacy," Greece's Permanent Representative to the UN said on Friday
In a recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) emergency session convened at Algeria’s request, Greece called for a balanced approach to the conflict in the Middle East, emphasizing humanitarian principles, diplomatic dialogue, and a sustainable resolution. The session followed a series of Israeli strikes on hospitals in Gaza, raising global concerns about the escalating humanitarian crisis.
During the session, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk presented a sobering report on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. The report detailed continuous attacks on healthcare facilities, significant civilian displacement, and alarming mortality rates among medical personnel and newborns. Turk condemned the use of heavy weapons against hospitals as violations of international law, potentially amounting to war crimes.
Greece’s Commitment to Humanitarian Principles
Addressing the council, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Evangelos C. Sekeris, expressed deep concern for the dire conditions in Gaza, where healthcare systems are on the brink of collapse due to ongoing conflict. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of safeguarding civilians, protecting healthcare infrastructure, and ensuring access to humanitarian aid.
“The destruction of the healthcare system in combination with the killing of patients, humanitarian workers, medical staff an other civiilian constitutes severe violation of international humanitarian and human rights law,” stated Sekeris. He urged the immediate opening of crossings for the unimpeded distribution of aid and the assurance that shelters for displaced persons remain safe havens rather than “death traps.”
While Greece recognized Israel’s right to self-defense, particularly after suffering significant casualties and hostage situations over the past year, Ambassador Sekeris stressed that all actions must align with international law. “Hospitals should not be used improperly for any military use nor any operation against those facilities be made under vague allegations.”
Reaffirming Greece’s commitment to a two-state solution, Sekeris highlighted the need for a political resolution grounded in mutual recognition and respect for international law. He reiterated that this approach remains the only viable path to lasting peace in the region.
In closing, Ambassador Sekeris emphasized the irreplaceable value of peace and the responsibility of the international community to pursue it earnestly. He called for an immediate ceasefire, the large-scale distribution of humanitarian aid, and the revitalization of diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
