Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis is scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on Friday, February 28, set to take place at the State Department. The meeting marks one of the first high-level engagements between a European foreign minister and Rubio since his appointment.

The Greek foreign minister’s meeting with his U.S. counterpart is considered a positive development for Greek diplomacy as it will be the first and long anticipated meeting with a U.S. official of the Trump administration.

The meeting comes at a time when Greek-U.S. relations are at their strongest, having gained significant momentum across multiple sectors in recent years.

This meeting provides an opportunity for Athens to establish initial contact with the new leadership at the State Department and explore further areas of deepening cooperation.

Key topics on the agenda include defense collaboration, strengthening economic and investment ties, and Greece’s role as an energy hub contributing to Europe’s energy security and diversification.

Another crucial subject is the Greek-American community, which serves as a bridge between the two nations, with six Greek-American representatives currently serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Gerapetritis is also expected to brief Rubio on the geopolitical situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, emphasizing Greece’s role as a reliable partner and a pillar of stability in the region.

Gerapetritis was the first EU official to visit Syria and meet with the country’s transitional leader Ahmad Al-Sarra and the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Asaad Αl Shaibani, as part of his Middle East tour.

The Greek minister also participated in the International Conference on Syria, in Paris, following his Syria visit.

With its strategic alliance with Israel and strong ties across the Arab world, Greece positions itself as a credible interlocutor among all parties involved.
