The leaders of the European Union arrived in Kyiv on Monday, February 24 to demonstrate their support for Ukraine on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion. Their visit highlights the EU’s commitment to Ukraine at a time when the country’s fate is seen as closely tied to the broader security of Europe.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized this message in a social media post, declaring that Ukraine is part of Europe and that its struggle for survival is also a battle for the future of the continent.

She shared a video of her arrival in Kyiv by train alongside European Council President António Costa, highlighting the significance of their presence in the Ukrainian capital.

“On the 3rd anniversary of Russia’s brutal invasion, Europe is in Kyiv. We are in Kyiv today, because Ukraine is Europe. In this fight for survival, it is not only the destiny of Ukraine that is at stake. It’s Europe’s destiny,” stated von der Leyen

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky marked the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion in February 2022, praising the “resistance” and “heroism” of his country.

“Three years of resistance. Three years of gratitude. Three years of absolute heroism from the Ukrainians. I am proud of Ukraine!” he wrote in a message on social media, expressing his thanks to “everyone who defends and supports Ukraine.”

Meanwhile, shortly after the release of exit polls regarding Germany’s elections on Sunday evening, Costa announced the convening of an emergency European Council meeting on March 6, 2025. The summit will focus on developments in Ukraine and broader European security concerns.

In his statement, Costa stressed the critical nature of the current moment for both Ukraine and Europe’s security. He noted a shared commitment among EU leaders to strengthen European defense and contribute decisively to peace on the continent, as well as to Ukraine’s long-term stability.

Costa affirmed that he would continue working closely with von der Leyen and member states to ensure the EU is prepared to make key decisions at the upcoming summit.
