EC VP Margaritis Schinas Appeals to Taylor Swift!

"Taylor Swift, last September, made a plea on social media to young Americans to register to vote. The day after her post, 35,000 new Americans had registered to vote."

As the June 2024 European elections approach, Brussels is actively seeking ways to mobilize young voters to participate. According to Euronews, Margaritis Schinas, Vice President of the European Commission responsible for promoting the European way of life, made an unexpected appeal to American pop star Taylor Swift, on Wednesday Jan. 10, considering her the most suitable figure to encourage youth engagement.

As Schinas commented “Taylor Swift, last September, made a plea on social media to young Americans to register to vote. The day after her post, 35,000 new Americans had registered to vote.” He was referring to the brief message Swift shared last year on her Instagram account, which boasts over 270 million followers.

He emphasized the “importance of the participation of young Europeans in this year’s European elections,” scheduled to take place between June 6 and 9.
“Now is the moment for the young people to have a voice at the ballot box, to praise or criticize European policies. That’s why it is crucial, I believe, to have, as we did in 2019, a high level of participation of young Europeans in the June elections,” Schinas stated.

The fact that the American pop star has scheduled to bring the Eras Tour to Europe, starting on May 9 in Paris, which will coincide with June EU elections is what prompted Margaritis Schinas to appeal to her to “convince” young people to vote.
