Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias is set to sign Greece’s accession to the European Sky Shield initiative, a German initiative for missile protection.

The Greek Minister is scheduled to meet with his Turkish counterpart, Yasar Guler, on the sidelines of the NATO Summit taking place in Brussels on Thursday. Remarking on the meeting, Dendias pointed out it was a good opportunity “to be reminded that it is necessary to maintain the current climate of détente, avoiding any provocations or actions that could undermine the atmosphere that currently exists.”

Nikos Dendias will sign Greece’s accession to the European Sky Shield initiative, a German initiative for missile protection. “I should note that Turkey will also join the same day,” said the Minister of National Defense.

The Greek Minister will also meet with his French counterpart, Sebastien Lecornu at the Summit, where the preparation of the NATO Summit in Washington will be discussed.
“I think that coordination with France, with which we have a close strategic relationship, is always of particular importance,” he noted.

A key matter on the agenda in Brussels is the strengthening of Ukraine.

The European Sky Shield Initiative is a project to build a ground-based integrated European air defense system that includes anti-ballistic missile capability. As of January 2024, nineteen European states participate in the initiative. Greece and Turkey are expected to formally join in 2024
