Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias on Monday briefed the prime minister and other Cabinet members over a plan to acquire and deploy a new anti-aircraft and anti-missile shield for the country, one modelled along the well-known Israeli “Iron Dome” system.
According to state broadcaster ERT, Dendias cited three stages of development for what’s being billed as a cutting-edge system, with the first being the creation of a new unified air defense command covering and comprised of all three military branches.
A second stage involves the actual tender for the new system, which is expected to curry bids from France, Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States in the first half of 2025.
Finally, the third stage involves the actual installation and operation of the system, which is estimated to occur in the summer 2026.
Israel’s “Iron Dome” system, for instance, is designed to intercept and destroy short-range missiles and shells fired from distances of four to 70 kilometers away.
