A draft bill entitled “Measures to Restrict Tax Evasion”, tabled by the national economy and finance ministry, was ratified by a majority of deputies in Parliament on Thursday evening.
All 158 deputies – in the 300-MP legislature – that voted in favor of the bill belong to the ruling New Democracy (ND) party. A total of 140 opposition deputies voted against.
Among others, the new legislation includes stricter rules and higher tax rates – based on presumed annual income – for self-employed professionals, craftsmen and freelancers.
The high-profile bill was bitterly opposed by various trade sector organizations, including by Bar associations, taxi drivers, civil engineers and other groups.
