On Sunday, July 21, US President Biden announced his decision to step aside as the Democratic presidential nominee for the forthcoming US presidential elections.
This move concludes weeks of intense deliberation among party leaders, who had been urging him to withdraw from the race following a poor debate performance that raised concerns about his age and ability to defeat former President Trump.
Biden’s withdrawal clears the way for Vice President Kamala Harris and other potential candidates, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom, to quickly launch their campaigns for the nomination ahead of the Democratic National Convention in mid-August.
In a statement, Biden expressed that stepping down was in the best interest of both his party and the country, allowing him to concentrate on his presidential duties for the remainder of his term.
He will address the nation later in the week. Biden also extended his gratitude to his campaign staff and acknowledged Harris for her exceptional partnership, though he did not endorse her as his successor.
The decision followed efforts by Biden, aged 81, and his supporters to downplay the widespread concerns expressed by Democratic lawmakers, donors, and political consultants regarding his age, suitability for office, and electability in the upcoming November elections
