The launch ceremony of the second FDI HN (Belh@rra) frigate ordered by the Hellenic Navy, the HS ‘Nearchos,’ took place on Thursday at Naval Group shipyards in Lorient, France, with the presence of Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias. This state-of-the-art warship is being constructed for the Hellenic Navy as part of its fleet modernization program.
The ‘Nearchos’ is the second of three advanced FDI HN frigates that will join the Greek fleet in the coming years. Known as Belh@rra, these frigates are a significant upgrade for the navy, strengthening its capabilities in both the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean regions.
These multi-role frigates, with a displacement of around 4,500 tons, belong to the latest generation of ‘digital’ warships. They have the equipment to perform continuous surveillance of air and sea space and can operate independently to support Greece’s defence goals.
The FDI HN frigates are equipped with advanced capabilities, allowing for the continuous monitoring of both air and sea space.
The ‘Nearchos’ itself will boast cutting-edge technologies, including the Panoramic Sensor Intelligence Module (PSIM), which integrates nearly all of the ship’s sensor systems.
It also features the advanced CAPTAS-4 anti-submarine warfare sonar and the fully digital Sea Fire radar. With a length of 122 meters, a top speed of 27 knots, and a crew of 120, the ‘Nearchos’ is well-positioned to enhance the Hellenic Navy’s capabilities in critical maritime regions.
