Lingering public anger and scrutiny over the 2023 Tempi rail disaster continues unabated, according to results of the latest Alco poll, although ruling New Democracy maintains a comfortable lead — 11 percentage points – over its political rivals even in the face of shrinking rallying among its supporters – 56%.
The poll results, presented on the prime-time newscast of Alpha TV, show waning support for all the main political parties sans the new out-of-Parliament and rightwing Foni tis Logikis (Voice of Reason) party, and the leftist anti-establishment Plefsi Eleftherias (Course of Freedom) party founded by former Parliament president Zoe Konstantopoulou.
Socialist PASOK, now in second place behind ND, fell by 1.2 percentage points in this poll, compared to the results of last month’s results from the same firm.
Tempi ‘shadow’
Asked about the deadly Tempi rail collision, which cost the lives of 57 people, 72% of respondents said they discerned an attempt at a “cover-up”.
Nearly half of the respondents, 44%, said they did not trust the independent judiciary in the Tempi investigation and in allocating responsibility for the worst rail disaster in Greece’s history.
Just as importantly, 81% of respondents said they believed that the government did not do as much as it could to make rail travel safe in the country.
