Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the new minimum wage in Greece would reach €950 by 2027, chairing a cabinet meeting at Maximos Mansion in Athens on Thursday morning.
Unemployment in Greece dropped further in September, reaching 9.3%, down from 9.5% in Aug. and 10.7% in September of the previous year, according to data from Eurostat. By contrast, the unemployment rate in the Eurozone remained steady at 6.3% in Sept., consistent with August’s rate, and down from 6.6% in Sept. of last year.
The winds of voter support are changing. Recent polls show a growing discontent among Greece’s electorate and shifting party preferences. The major political parties in Greece are all angling to consolidate their forces and win back public support.
Turkey angrily responded on Thursday afternoon to the latest, more-or-less negative enlargement report by the EU Commission on its long-standing bid to join the bloc, taking particular umbrage over its standing refusal to recognize the Republic of Cyprus, which represents the entire Greek Cypriot community on the divided east Mediterranean island. The EU enlargement report also cited the continued refusal by Turkey to allow Cypriot-registered vessels and airplanes – which belong to an EU member-state – to access its ports and airports.
