This week, TO BHMA International Edition’s senior Editor Moira Lavelle takes a deep dive into the investigation of the fatal 2023 train crash outside Tempi, Greece. Two years after the collision, the tragedy has once again dominated headlines as a series of revelations have stoked public outrage.
Amid lingering questions about how two trains collided and why they burst into flames are allegations that the crash site was never properly analyzed—and that the disaster was, in fact, covered up.
“Explaining Greece” spoke with accident investigation engineer Kostas Lakafosis, who has spent the last two years digging into the specifics of Greece’s deadliest train disaster, about what actually happened.
Two years ago, when Lakafosis saw the news about the collision outside Tempi, two things immediately stuck out to him. First that it was clear that, oddly, the trains had burst into flames, in a blaze that was inexplicably large. Second, instead of securing the site for forensic analysis, authorities were using earthmovers to clear the wreckage.
