Clear, aniseed-flavored ouzo continues to lead all other Greek spirits in terms of export value and quantity. First-half 2024 results show that ouzo accounts for 59% of the former and 71% of the latter.

Germany remains the biggest consumer of ouzo worldwide, accounting for 43% of the liquor’s exports from Greece, according to recent figures from Eurostat. Neighboring Bulgaria comprises the second biggest market for Greek ouzo, absorbing 20.3% in terms of export value and 16.5% in terms of quantity. Surprisingly, Iraq is in third place, with 19.8% of Greek ouzo exports sent to the Mideast country (19.3% value).

Compared to the first six months of 2023, this year’s January-June figures showed an increase of 7.3% and 3.6% in terms of value and quantity, respectively.

The Greek Federation of Spirits Producers (SEAOP) reports that 71.2% of all spirits made in the country are exported, with a total export value (based on 2021 figures) just short of 90 million euros.
