The IEX system, whose cable is being laid by SubCom, arrived at the Tympaki site, along Crete’s southern coast on the Libyan Sea

Vodafone Greece on Monday announced that the India-Europe-Xpress (IEX) cable system, billed as one of the largest submarine cable systems in the world, has finally linked with the large island of Crete.

The IEX system, whose cable is being laid by SubCom, arrived at the Tympaki site, along Crete’s southern coast on the Libyan Sea, and will be connected to Vodafone Greece’s cable station in the region.

The IEX system extends for nearly 10,000 kilometers and is part of an intercontinental project that also includes the India-Asia-Xpress (IAX) system.

According to a company press release, the IEX connects Mumbai, in western India, to Europe and interconnects the Mumbai coast, extending IEX eastward with IAX to reach Singapore. The IEX cable, reaches the Middle East and Africa (Oman, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia and Egypt) as well as the Mediterranean with extensions to France, Italy and Greece.

The Tympaki landing station will be the first cable receiving station in southern Crete, according to Vodafone Greece.
