Greece’s finance ministry on Thursday evening announced a deadline extension of a few days for taxpayers and businesses to file tax returns for 2023, a development that was more-or-less expected as tens of thousands of filings are missing this year compared to last year.

Specifically, individual taxpayers will have until Friday, Aug. 2, to file their returns – only online, as with previous years. For businesses, the deadline is Aug. 9. The first payment of any taxes imposes will also be Aug. 2 and Aug. 9, respectively.

Since a relevant tax bureau platform opened to receive tax returns on April 25, nearly 6.1 million individual returns were filed; more than 252,000 by businesses.

The figures translate to 93.3% of the total for individuals already filed; 81.8% for business entities.

Glitches had also plagued the online platform over the past few days, ostensibly due to the mass filing by individuals and businesses.

The previous deadline was the last day in July.
