Greece’s Public Power Corporation (PPC) announced that almost forty years after it began construction of a hydropower plant in the region of Trikala, the Council of State has finally cleared the way for its operation.
PPC began construction of the plant in 1986 and completed it in 2001, but it never operated due to appeals from local residents on environmental grounds.
The project is valued at 500 million euros and cost the company 20-30 million euros on an annual basis on account of the fact that it remained closed, said the company.
The plant is located in Mesochora, Trikala on the Acheloos river. Local residents of the area appealed eight times to the Supreme Court and even one time the Court of the European union.
