Greek ports recorded an increase in passenger traffic by 11.4% in the first quarter of 2024 compared, compared with the corresponding period last year. By contrast, 1Q 2023 saw a 16.7% hike from the same period in 2022, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announced on Thursday.

Conversely, the volume of goods in Greece’s ports decreased by an infinitesimal 0.1% in the first quarter of 2024 compared with 1Q 2023. A 9.6% hike was posted when comparing the first quarter of 2023 with the same trimester in 2022.

Finally, the number of vehicles passing through Greek ports increased by 7.6% over the same period. At the same time, a 10.5% was recorded when comparing the first quarter of 2023 with the first trimester of 2022.

The Greek Maritime Minister (Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy), Christos Styliandes, announced the start of a €300-million program to upgrade port infrastructure in the country over the next two decades, during a sit-down interview at OT’s studio at the 88th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).

The plan involves well-studied strategic moves that would preserve the uniqueness and beauty of the Aegean. He explained, however, that this funding is insufficient, estimating that around €5 billion will be needed over the next 20 years.
