New Online Shipping Register Unveiled at Posidonia 2024

The registration portal - niologio.gov.gr - will be presented at the ministry of maritime affairs' pavilion at the Posidonia 2024 Exhibition

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is scheduled to officially unveil a new online shipping register platform aimed at reducing “red tape” and streamlining the registration process for ocean-going vessels.

The registration portal, called niologio.gov.gr, will be presented at the pavilion of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, following the inauguration of the “Posidonia 2024” Exhibition.

The new platform aims to enhance the competitiveness of the Greek registry and buttress efforts to entice more ships to hoist the Greek flag, according to the ministry of maritime affairs.

One of the key innovations of the new platform is that it provides an automated issuance and delivery of the Nationality Document during the registration process. The Nationality Document will be automatically generated and forwarded to the owning company immediately upon completion of the registration process, in digital form. The document is digitally signed and features a unique QR code, allowing instant verification of its authenticity by any relevant authority worldwide.

Greece is the largest ship owning nation in the world, as Greek shipowners control the highest share, 21%, of the global merchant fleet in terms of deadweight tons – dwt3. During the last ten years the total capacity of the Greek merchant fleet, currently consisting of 5,520 ships, has grown by 50%.
