Greece is planning to become a transit hub for south-eastern Europe in logistics and cargo transportation with the creation of four projects. Totalling over 2 billion euros the projects are set to unfold in Attica and Thessaloniki.
These projects are expected to upgrade the country’s infrastructure turning it into a gateway for the distribution of inbound products to Europe from the markets of Africa and the Middle East.
The first of the four, which is currently underway in Thessaloniki, is a logistics center, will significantly reduce transportation time needed for goods to reach the city’s port. The president of the Greek Exporters Association (SEVE) highlighted investors’ interest from Saudi Arabia, India and UAE, in the center, as it will give their products access to European markets.
What is more, in Athens, a commercial park is to be developed in the municipality of Filis. This venture is estimated to attract more than one billion euros.
This mega project will provide relief to the capital’s urban basin as more than 4000 trucks will be diverted to other major roads, while it will contribute to the modernization of Greece’s national logistics.
Moreover, the third initiative, the Thriasio Freight Center, part of Greece’s integrated transport system in Athens, is expected to enhance the nation’s geopolitical presence within the global supply chain.
Finally, work on the Hull Logistics Center, the first tri-modal hub in Greece, in Aspropyrgos, will begin in 2025. The center aims to connect the coastal front with roadways, a railway line and a 150,000 square-meter warehouse complex.
