Greece: 112,000 New Business Ventures in 2023

A total of 112,000 new businesses were started in 2023, up by 6.1% over 2022, mainly in construction, transportation and storage.

A total of 112,000 new businesses were started in Greece last year, up from 105,565 in 2022, marking a 6.1% rise, according to data released this week by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

Most new business ventures were in the construction sector (16.1%) and in transportation and storage (16.1%).

At the same time, new businesses in energy supply dropped by 56.1% and in the media & communication sector by 3.7%.

According to the same data, there were 11 bankruptcies reported in 2023.

In the last quarter (Q4) of 2023, regions reporting the largest number of new business registrations were Northern Greece, 984 out of the 6,112 new businesses were in wholesale and retail trade, and in motor vehicle repair.

In Central Greece, agriculture, forestry and fisheries ventures accounted for 1,978 new entries out of 6,201. In Attica, professional, scientific and technical activities with 2,211 entries out of 11,602, and on the Aegean islands and Crete, in agriculture, forestry and fisheries with 1,370 entries out of a total of 3,627.
