Eurostat: Inflation in Greece Eases to 3.2% in April; 2.4% in Eurozone

The rate of increase for food prices was up by 4.9% in April 2024, compared to 4.8% in the previous month

The inflation rate apparently eased in Greece this past month, standing at 3.2%, according to preliminary figures released on Tuesday by Eurostat.

Conversely, the national statistics authority, EL.STAT, recorded the inflation rate in the country at 3.2% in March 2024, up from 2.9% the previous month. The latter authority usually reports a lower figure than Eurostat, owing to different indices used to measure the inflation rate.

Price hikes in the eurozone remained steady in April 2024, at 2.4%, while the economy posted a higher growth rate in 1Q 2024, according to initial estimates on Tuesday.

On a monthly basis inflation was 0.6% in the eurozone.

In terms of Greece, the more ominous figure again centered on the rate of increase for food prices, as the specific but all-important subsector was up by 4.9% in April 2024, compared to 4.8% in the previous month.

Essentially, food price increases in Greece have consistently been higher than the eurozone average since last October.
