Eurostat: Greek Unemployment Drops to 9.3% in September

Among young people aged 15-24, unemployment fell notably to 16.3% from 23.1% in Sept. 2023. For those aged 25-74, the rate declined to 9% from 10%.

Unemployment in Greece dropped further in September, reaching 9.3%, down from 9.5% in Aug. and 10.7% in September of the previous year, according to data from Eurostat. By contrast, the unemployment rate in the Eurozone remained steady at 6.3% in Sept., consistent with August’s rate, and down from 6.6% in Sept. of last year.

Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) reveal that Greece had 437,648 unemployed individuals in Sept., marking a decline of 65,905 people compared to the same month in 2023, which is a 13.1% decrease, and a reduction of 7,615 people compared to Aug. 2024, a 1.7% dip.

Meanwhile, the number of employed individuals rose to 4,262,924, up by 66,317 from Sept. 2023, an increase of 1.6%, and by 4,272 from Aug. 2024, which is a marginal 0.1% uptick.

The population under 75, who are not active in the workforce, including those neither employed nor seeking employment, stood at 3,070,957 in Sept. This figure decreased by 16,974 compared to last year’s Sept., a 0.5% reduction, though it showed a slight rise of 1,130 individuals compared to Aug. 2024.

Among young people aged 15-24, unemployment fell notably to 16.3% from 23.1% in Sept. 2023. For those aged 25-74, the rate declined to 9% from 10%.

Gender-specific data also show improvement, with unemployment among women dropping to 11.4% from 13.4% in Sept. last year, and among men, falling to 7.6% from 8.6%.
