ELSTAT: Greek Merchant Fleet Tonnage Falls 3.5% y-o-y in May 2024

The drop in gross tonnage is for vessels 100 GRT and over, and is a continuation of the overall downward trend since January 2022

The Greek statistical authority ELSTAT released results about the strength of the Greek merchant fleet in terms of size and tonnage and revealed that the gross tonnage (GRT) of vessels of 100 GRT and over fell a further 3.5% in May 2024 compared to May 2023.

This comes on the back of a 3.9% drop from May 2022 to May 2023 and continues the overall downward trend since January of 2022.

The change in GRT is weighed down by a 5.7% y-o-y decrease in passenger ships, 3.5% in tankers and 3.2% in cargo.

The size of the Greek Merchant fleet bounced back just slightly in May 2024, compared to May 2023, and was 0.2% higher.

This followed a 0.6% decrease year-on-year in May 2023 and is far off the highs of March 2022.

In May 2024 the total number of ships in the Greek merchant fleet were 1,823 for a total GRT of 36,387,482.
