Greek tourism is booming this year, evident in the surge of passenger traffic at Athens International Airport in April 2024. Numbers reached 2.49 million, up 16.3% from April 2023, according to Athens International Airport Company.
In detail, passenger traffic, both domestic and international, surpassed last year’s numbers by 4.1% and 21.7%, respectively.
Overall, airport traffic hit 7.7 million passengers in the first four months of the year, marking a 16.5% increase. Both domestic and international passenger traffic grew by 8.4% and 20.2%, respectively.
The number of flights at Athens International Airport during the same period saw a 13.5% increase compared to 2023. Domestic and international flights also saw rises of 5.9% and 19.3%, respectively, compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, according to Bank of Greece data, travel receipts soared by 22.2% in Feb. 2024 and by 24.5% for Jan-Feb. 2024.
Eurozone travel surged by 33.4%, while travel from EU-27 countries outside the eurozone surged by 46.4%. Specifically, German travel saw a 25.4% increase, while French travel declined by 9.1%.
For non-EU-27 countries, travel from the UK decreased by 34.7%, while US travel spiked by 158.4%. Notably, there were no recorded travels from Russia.
