Greek public debt to GDP ratio continues to be the highest in the EU for Q2 2024 at 163.3%, even though according to Eurostat, it recorded the second largest reduction on a year-to-year (YTY) basis at -8.9 pp, with Cyprus having the largest decrease at -10.0 pp.


The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday unveiled a slightly more optimistic forecast for the Greek economy compared to the projection included in the draft budget for 2025, with the former citing a figure of 2.3% in GDP growth this year but only 2% for next year.


One in four Greeks does not believe that any government party or coalition of government parties can reduce the high rates of poverty in the country.  A recent poll by polling company Prorata looked at Greek attitudes towards, and the causes of, poverty in the country. The results showed a population disillusioned with the Greek political parties and the Eurozone, and an overwhelming agreement that the current economic and social system is causing poverty.


Monthly asylum data released by Eurostat on asylum applications on Monday indicated that 74,695 first-time asylum applicants (non-EU citizens) applied for international protection in EU countries in July 2024, a 7.5% decrease compared to July 2023.
