Daily visitors to the best-known Minoan archaeological site, Knossos, near the modern-day port city of Irakleio on Crete, exceed 5,000, according to museum officials.
In fact, the number of visitors at the site hosting the Minoan palace is estimated to exceed 200,000 this month, making it the most popular attraction after the Acropolis archaeological site and the adjacent Acropolis Museum.
According to figures, the total number of visitors to Knossos in 2023 reached nearly 944,000, with August – as to be expected – as the most popular month, at nearly 171,000.
The forecast for this year easily exceeds one million visitors, buoyed by an increase in the number of cruise ships paying a visit to Irakleio (Heraklion), with the “must-see” attractions being Knossos and the city’s archaeological museum.
Up until the last day of July 2024, the number of visitors to Knossos neared 526,000.
