Christmas Lighting Ceremony at SNFCC
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) will start its countdown to the festive Christmas season today, as it unveils its impressive and joyous decorations. Since its opening, the Foundation has aspired to establish itself as the epicenter of the merry season, organizing activities and events throughout December to get children and adults into the jolly spirit.
Events will commence at 7PM Friday evening with an official lighting ceremony, and will run through the whole month, culminating in SNFCC’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
Christmas Lighting Event at The Ellinikon Experience Park
For those who missed the first Christmas event or just can’t getting enough of the holiday season, The Ellinikon Experience Park will take its turn and illuminate the area with twinkling lights starting this Sunday at 6PM.
The park – part Europe’s greatest urban regeneration project called The Ellinikon – opened its doors to the public two years ago and since then has welcomed more than 2 million visitors. 100th Birthday of Maria Callas
In view of the centennial birth anniversary of the quintessential diva Maria Callas—an event acknowledged in UNESCO’s list of commemorations— Athens is set to host a series of celebratory cultural events dedicated to the life and musical legacy of the soprano.
The recently inaugurated Maria Callas Museum of the Municipality of Athens opens its doors to the public on December 2 in celebration of the anniversary of Callas’ birth. The Museum will be open from 10AM to midnight, and invites adults and children to participate in educational themed tours guided by the Museum’s scientific team.
On the same day, the Greek National Opera is scheduled to showcase the documentary “Mary, Marianna, Maria: The Uncelebrated Greek Years of Callas” by Vasilis Louras at the Stavros Niarchos Hall. The film delves into the period during which Callas matured both as a woman and an artist, specifically in Athens during the Second World War. It also explores the years after internationally acclaimed soprano re-established her ties with Greece.
Athens Comic Book Convention
Athens will host its 7th annual comic-book convention, dubbed ‘AthensCon,’ in a three-day event this weekend which is designed for all ages, according to the event organizers.
From December 1st through the 3rd, the Tae Kwon Do Stadium in the Municipality of Palaio Faliro, located south of Athens, will be transformed into a “pop-culture haven.” This weekend’s itinerary includes speeches and panels by special guests, exhibitions, competitions, workshops and, according to organizers, “exciting surprises” for all event goers.
