Some 250 productions from around the world will be screened at Thessaloniki’s 26th International Documentary Festival (TiDF) this month (March 7 until March 17).
The specialized cinematic festival will be hosted at three venues, primarily at the Olympion Cinema, the iconic annual home of the long-standing Thessaloniki Film Festival, along with the Limani Village and Makedonikon venues. Screenings will also be available through TiDF’s digital platform.
Divided into four main competition sections (International Competition, Newcomers, >>Film Forward and Immersive: All Around Cinema), international and domestic documentaries will compete for the Golden Alexander Award and a corresponding cash prize.
Additionally, Open Horizons, Top Docs and NextGen sections have promised what organizers call daring, distinct and younger-generation documentaries.
The festival opens with Fernando Trueba’s latest animation short “They Shot the Piano Player”, honoring the Academy Award-winning director with the Golden Alexander Award.
Two-hundred and twelve documentaries will premiere at the festival, which also gives a nod to LGBTQI+ international cinema with the tribute “Citizen Queer” and Panayiotis Evangelidis’ award for his contribution to queer cinema. Acclaimed artistic director Dimitris Papaioannou’s multifaceted work takes center stage at the festival.
