Quite the different sound from previous posts, but equally deserving of appreciation is rock supergroup Audioslave.
“Like a Stone” was featured as at the second single from their self-titled debut album in early 2003.
I mean, let’s get something straight, Chris Cornell (lead vocals) is hands down one of the best rock singers of all time. Add to this the bassist, drummer and guitar player of rock phenomenon Rage against the Machine and it’s no surprise that both the band and the song were a huge hit.
The track topped the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts, and reaching number 31 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Like a Stone” has been certified Gold in the US, Australia and Portugal and silver in Britain and earned the band a Grammy nomination.
Often confused as a love song, bassist Tim Commerford explained that the “Like a Stone” is actually about death. It speaks about an old man whose family and friends have passed on and he is waiting to be reunited with them. Cornell commented on the song in an interview, “It’s a song about concentrating on the afterlife you would hope for, rather than the normal monotheistic approach: You work really hard all your life to be a good person and a moral persona and fair and generous, and then you go to hell anyway.”
It’s moody and powerful, and well-worth the rave.
