On Sunday night the movie Poor Things by Greek Director Yorgos Lanthimos won the 2024 Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy, beating out favorite Barbie.
Lanthimos accepted the award on behalf of the cast and also took the opportunity to note how excited he was to talk to Bruce Springsteen at the event, drawing laughter from the crowd.
Lanthimos won the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival last September for the film.
His film Poor Things was nominated in seven categories: Best Screenplay (Tony McNamara), Best Director (Yorgos Lanthimos), Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo), Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy, and finally, Best Original Score—Motion Picture (Jerskin Fendrix).
Emma Stone also took home Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for her role as Bella Baxter in the movie. Bella Baxter is a young woman who has died but is brought back to life by a scientist who replaces her brain with that of her unborn child, giving her the mind of an infant.
Her brain and body aren’t quite in sync.
“The film is about freedom and the ability to see the world with our own eyes and not those of others,” Lanthimos said.
Other nominated movies included the blockbuster Barbie, which picked up nine nominations, making it the second-most-nominated film in the 81-year history of the awards, according to Variety, and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer with eight nominations. Martin Scorsese’s Killer of the Flower Moon also picked up seven nominations.
Poor Things premiered in Greek cinemas on Jan 1.
